Day In My Life: Jennifer Berson
Are you wondering what a typical day looks like as a PR professional? Here are some insights into a typical day in my life!
I’ve been running my PR agency for over 16 years, so my day-to-day looks a little different than it did when I first started. I try to keep every Friday as work-free as possible so I can spend time on the things I’m passionate about outside of PR.
But Monday through Thursday, I structure my days around my energy levels, client needs, and tasks to grow my business. As a PR professional, you can work from anywhere—your home, a coffee shop, or even outside. This is amazing and gives you so much flexibility to switch things up during the day and boost your productivity.
To be totally honest, I plan most of my weeks around when I’m going to need to shower and do my makeup. I have a lot on my plate as a PR professional, and so I leverage the time I take getting ready to do multiple things. For example, on a day where I’m getting fully ready, I’ll schedule client calls, record live videos and social media content, and plan meetings with my team. Other days, I have what I call “back office days,” where I can stay in comfy clothes (work-from-home perks!) and not worry about being on camera.
9:00 AM – 12:00 PM: Starting your day the right way is essential.
Every morning, I start my day with creative, focused tasks. I’ll work on high-level client projects, craft pitches, strategize new launches and campaigns, and brainstorm new ways to connect with ideal clients in my niche.
I spend most of my time during the day doing deep-focused writing. Of course, there are also client calls, business strategy work, and other creative projects, but high-level writing is a big part of my business!
When working on high-level work, I follow the Pomodoro technique to be the most productive. If you’ve never heard of it, basically, you spend 25 minutes really concentrating on one task, and then take a five-minute break. I repeat this process until my most important tasks are complete.
12:00 PM – 1:00 PM: Because I work from home, I make sure to take a real lunch break.
Boundaries are super important as a PR professional, and clearing my mind while I eat gives me a chance to come back refreshed and focused.
1:00 PM – 3:00 PM: My energy is highest in the morning, so I avoid more administrative tasks like emails until later in the day.
Some of the other tasks I work on during the day include generating end-of-the-month reports for our clients, creating press clips, and delegating tasks to my team.
Since I’ve stepped out of the day-to-day tasks in my business and shifted to a PR agency owner role, I have built an incredible team who works on pitching, admin, and tons of other tasks each day!
On a typical day, I try never to schedule myself too thin with multiple meetings or calls back-to-back. PR is highly creative, and I do my best work when I take time to refresh my mind. I make time for walks, working out, checking the news, and self-care—every single day. It’s possible for you too, as long as you actively make time for the things you care about!
3:00 PM: Most of my work happens during the day when my kids are at school.
When they finish up for the day each afternoon, I shift to “mom mode” and focus on spending time with my family. If I have a few things to wrap up, I try to keep it brief. I end the day spending time with my husband, hanging out with my kids, and taking care of things in my home!
There you have it! Every day looks a little different as a PR professional, but this is a pretty typical overview of what my days look like. I took the time to find a daily productivity routine that works for me—so try things out and see what works for you!
